Patterns

Pattern 1   Make + object + bare infinitive

We use this pattern when we „force” someone to do something.

Examples:

  • My teacher made us do this homework. = My teacher forced us to do this homework
  • Mrs Tania made me play Chopin instead of Bach. = Mrs Tania forced me to play Chopin instead of Bach.
  • My father makes me clean the house.
  • His mother makes him take info courses.
  • I make my sister do her homework.

Exercise:

Use the pattern (make + obj + bare inf) to express the following:

  • Mum forced me to eat everything. = Mum made me eat everything.
  • Our teacher forced us to do a lot of exercises. = Our teacher made us do a lot of exercises.
  • Our Sport teacher forced us to run 1000m. = Our teacher made us run 1000m.
  • My parents forced me to go to the party with my little brother. = My parents made me go to the party with my little brother.
  • The school forces us to carry a lot of books in the school-bags. = The school makes us carry a lot of books in the school-bags.
  • The school forces us to wear white clothes. = The school makes us wear white clothes.

 

Pattern 2   LET + object + bare infinitive

The pattern ‘let + object + bare infinitive’ is used to express the fact that we allow someone to do something, or we give someone permission to do something.

Or we don’t stop someone doing something.

Examples:

  • I allow my son to go on that trip. = I let my son go on the trip.
  • The teacher lets me write the exercise on the whiteboard.
  • My father lets me play games on the mobile phone.
  • Mum let me eat the whole cake yesterday.

Exercise:

Use the pattern (let + obj + bare infinitive) to express the following:

  • My teacher allowed me to come late yesterday. = My teacher let me come late yesterday.
  • My mum allowed me to eat ice-cream. = My mum let me eat that ice-cream.
  • My parents allowed us to stay late for a great film last evening = My parents let us stay late for a great film last evening.
  • My dad allows me to drive his car. = My dad lets me drive his car.
  • His parents allow him to play outside until late in the evening. = His parents let him play outside until late in the evening.
